Where to find cheap flights
The airlines themselves sometimes offer cheap flights direct to the public - British Airways, Air France and KLM are worth a quick look, especially if you're travelling within Europe or to New York.
If you want a cheap sheduled flight, check the top 5. If you have more time and / or want a cheap charter flight, check the others too.
ebookers - is the online store for a 'pre-dot com' telephone based cheap flights specialist - Flightbookers. So it's not surprising that the website's best feature is the cheap flights search. It also offers holidays, hotels, car hire and even last minute cruises.
Opodo - the web site set up by a number of leading European airlines to sell their late availability seats direct, rather than through the other websites listed here. On the home page, 'Opodo Offers' gives you a target for cheap flights to certain destinations and the quick search lives up to its name.
OTC - great for long haul cheap flights, especially to America, a favourite of regular travellers and it's easy to see why. A quick cheap flights search engine and some excellent prices. As with expedia, you might look at their city breaks section, where you can add a flight and hotel and get a discount on both.
expedia - this UK website gets around one million visitors a month and is one of the UK's biggest online travel companies. Like Travelocity, the home page is a bit busy, but the site is easy to use and you can book cheap flights, holidays, hotels and cars.
lastminute - always worth a look if you're looking for cheap flights to a popular destination. A bit hit and miss though, sometimes you find great prices, sometimes you waste 5 minutes of your time.
skydeals - owned by Thomson Holidays, this website is fast and efficient. You can search for cheap flights by airline or by price across scheduled and charter flights.
Travelocity - uses the SABRE reservation system used by traditional offline travel agents. If your looking for cheap flights, it's 'Best Fare Finder' tool is great. 'Fare Watcher' is also a useful, if addictive, tool.
easyValue - as mentioned in point 5 below, easyValue has a flight finder tool that allows you to compare back-to-back tickets to standard return tickets. This is handy if you need to take a flight that does not include a Saturday night (and so won't be classed by the airline as a 'leisure' flight). However, the tool is fairly new and searches are possible for a limited number of destinations.
